Cost of Kitchen Tiles in Nigeria 2024
Your choice of flooring in a kitchen is very important.
The kitchen is one part of the home that receives the heaviest traffic and there’s always the threat of spills, moisture and grimes.
As such, choosing a durable flooring option is in most cases non-negotiable.
Gone are the days where the major flooring options available in Nigeria are rubber carpets, cement and rugs. Today, you have far better options.
Tiles provide a wide range of options and are quite durable. They are, therefore, an excellent option for the kitchen and probably any part of the house you may choose to decorate.
The truth is there are many types of tiles out there but not all are suitable for heavy traffic and moisture prone areas like the kitchen.
Depending on a particular type of tile’s Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI) rating (which tells you the level of hardness and durability of tiles), it may be suitable for a bathroom, living room, kitchen or walls only. So, choosing the right type of tiling option is very important.
This post shows you the various types of kitchen tiles in Nigeria and their prices as well as a simple guide on how to calculate the number of tiles needed to cover any kitchen space.

Ceramic Tiles
If you are looking for a cheaper tiling option that’s durable and premium looking at the same time, your best bet is to go for a ceramic tile. Ceramic tile is an excellent option for kitchen flooring and provides a durable surface for such high traffic areas.
Ordinarily, ceramic tiles are porous and absorb liquids. This makes them get stained easily and tend to be harder to maintain. Glazed ceramic tiles are a bit less porous and are not as absorbent as the ordinary type. This makes for a better option and easier maintenance.
The price of ceramic tiles ranges from N1,200 to N1,750 in Nigeria.
Porcelain Tiles
Porcelain tiles and ceramic tiles are similar in a lot of ways. Porcelain tiles, however, are a lot more resistant to water and easier to maintain.
Most commercial kitchens use porcelain tiles because they are more durable and do not scratch easily. They are made from fired clay and are more durable than ceramic tiles. The tiles are, however, a bit more expensive than ceramic tiles and because they are stronger, they are tougher to cut and work with.
The price of porcelain tiles ranges from N2,500 to N4,000 in Nigeria.
Natural Stone Tiles
Among the various types of flooring options for a building, none is as elegant as the natural stone tiles. The tile is the name given to a wide range of tiling materials gotten from mountain stones.
These stones are obtained in their natural forms and shaped to provide a tiling option. If you’re looking for a tiling option that will add a touch of luxury and ‘earthy’ feel to your kitchen, living room, bathroom or office, natural tiles are your best bet.
Natural tiles are the most expensive types of tiles in Nigeria and the most durable of all types of tiles. They last the longest. Natural stone tiles, however, are a lot harder to maintain and you may need to use sealant from time to time to prevent grimes from getting in between the pore spaces.
The cost of natural stone tiles in Nigeria ranges from N5,500 to N8,000.

Kitchen Tiles Rating and Recommended Usage
Not all types of tiles are suitable for use on the floor of every room in a building. Before paying for any particular tile, you might want to confirm the PEI rating and ensure it is suitable for the purpose you’re buying it for.
The PEI rating is the rating system used to determine the suitability of a man-made tile (ceramic and porcelain) for any given room.
Most times, any tile with a PEI rating of 3 or lower is recommended for use in very low traffic areas or on walls. Therefore, your choice of man-made tiles for your kitchen floor should be greater than 3. But you may go for anyone equal to 3, below, or above for the walls.
How to Calculate the Number of Tiles Needed for Your Kitchen
It is important you know how to estimate the number of tiles required to cover your kitchen floor. Aside from saving you from being cheated, it can help you plan your budget better.
This part of the post is aimed at helping you determine the number of tiles needed to cover your kitchen space, and the number of tiles package you’ll need to buy.
Step 1
Measure the length and breadth of your kitchen floor. If you plan to cover the walls, you should also measure the height and width of the wall. Since the wall is bound to be four-sided, you may just measure one side of the adjacent sides.
Step 2
Multiply the length of the floor by the width. Also, multiply the height of the wall by the width and do the same for the adjacent sides to get the total footage of the four walls.
Step 3
Add the square footage of the floor to the square footage of the walls. This will give you the total square footage of the kitchen.
Step 4
Divide the total square footage by the length of the tile you’ll be going for. For instance, if you’re going for a 12 x 12 tile, then divide your total square footage by 12. This will give you the total number of tiles you need to buy.

Once you get the total number of tiles to buy, you might decide to stop there and work with that figure or better still proceed to determine the number of packets you will need to purchase.
Tiles come in packets, with each packet containing a definite number of tiles. For instance, some packets may contain six 12 x 12 tiles. So, it might be helpful if you know the number of such packets you’ll need to purchase. To do this, simply divide the total number of tiles needed by the number of tiles in each packet.
As a rule, purchase about 10% more tiles than you’ll need … to cover for damage and cutting.
