Nigerian Universities School Fees

Imo State University (IMSU) School Fees 2024

Imo state university (IMSU) was established in 1981 via the decree 4 passed by the Imo state house of Assembly.  As we know already, Imo State University is a state university located in Imo state, precisely, Orji Road, Okigwe, Owerri.

According to sources, the permanent site is somewhere between Ngor-okpala and Mba-ise LGA.  This was one of the plans made by the state government. However, the school is currently located at Lake Nwaebere.

Initially, IMSU’s campus was actually the present campus of Abia State University.  However, things changed in 1991 when Imo state was divided and Abia state was carved out of it. That was when the former Imo state university Uturu became Abia State University Uturu.

So, IMSU had to be moved to Alvan Ikoku College of Education’s Campus for a while. It was later moved again to the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) temporary site after FUTO was moved to its permanent site somewhere between Ihiagwa and Obinze in Owerri West local government.

Imo State University School Fees for All Courses

So how much do Imo state university students pay? That’s exactly what you’re about to find out.

Firstly, IMSU runs a unique fee payment system. Indigenes of Imo state and non-indigenes pay a different amount. Usually, the non-indigenes pay twice of what indigenes pay. There have been protests about this but it hasn’t changed. A lot of other state schools are also run this way.

At a time, one of the policies of the state government was free education. This was witnessed both in primary and secondary schools. For the tertiary institutions, it’s been quite shaky. Shaky in the sense that there have been conflicting reports. Some Imo state students say all they pay is the ancillary fees while others say they pay more than that.

So, it is possible that it isn’t implemented in tertiary schools. It could also mean that certain people are not following the right procedures or the proper funding just doesn’t get to the school authorities. In a nutshell, some indigenes pay school fees while others don’t.

As seen from above, indigenes generally pay half of what non-indigenes pay. Apart from regular degree programmes, Imsu also offers part-time studies, pre-degree and postgraduate degree programs.

How to Gain Admission into Imsu

On a very honest note, Imsu is not one of the best schools in Nigeria; it has been dubbed a glorified secondary school by some of its students. There have also been rumours of widespread/normalized cheating and colluding. That means that students pay for grades from their lectures.

According to sources, it has even been mandated by certain lecturers. So, such lecturers might just come to class twice in a semester, drop their hand out and wait for the Mullah. This is not to say there are neither serious students nor lecturers in the school. However, it is rather a rarity than a norm.

If you’re looking for very good academic work, Imsu is not the place to go. However, the social life in the school is great; the school is situated in the heart of town, so going out and partying is actually very easy.

Getting into IMSU is a bit challenging just like every other university. Not because the school is loved by all, but majorly because there’s a dearth of higher institutions of learning in Nigeria. A good score, connections or/and money will give you an edge to get into the institution.

IMSU Pre-Degree Program

Basically, pre-degree courses are for students who are eligible to attend the university but weren’t offered admission. For you to be eligible to apply for pre-degree, you need to have your O-level result and have scored a minimum of 180 in the previous year’s jamb.

Pre-degree programs usually last for two semesters. Here, you are taught A-level courses and would eventually be assessed at the end of each semester. You’ll then be offered admission into 100 level, depending on your grade.

Various faculties offer admission into Imsu through the pre-degree program. Some of which include Medicine, Social Sciences, Health Sciences, Computer Science, Education, Law, Humanities, and Engineering among others.

How to Apply for IMSU Pre-Degree Admission

I categorized the application into 3 steps for easy understanding.

Step 1: Generating Your Invoice

First, you have to visit the University website and generate your pre-degree invoice. You’ll have to input some personal details like your name, phone number and others to get this done.
